GlamLab: AR Try-On Experience

GlamLab is Ulta Beauty’s augmented reality try-on experience, enabling guests to virtually test products across mobile and web. My role focused on modernizing the UI surrounding the AR camera and aligning it with Palette, ensuring clarity, consistency, and accessibility for a seamless user experience.

01The Problem

The AR experience used patterns that predated our Palette design system and did not align with the rest of the product. UI elements around the AR camera used different spacing, type, and interaction rules, creating a disconnected experience.

The surfaces that introduced and contextualized try-on also needed modernization.

02My Role

I supported the teams working on AR by improving the surrounding UI, aligning patterns with Palette, and guiding decisions for consistency.

  • Updating the UI that frames the AR camera
  • Standardizing controls, buttons, and states
  • Aligning the AR entry points with platform navigation
  • Improving supporting surfaces like PDP integration
  • Cleaning up visual hierarchy and spacing
  • Ensuring accessibility for controls and labels

My focus was on system alignment, clarity, and cohesive design.

03Impact & Reflection

  • A cohesive AR interface that aligns with Palette and the broader Ulta Beauty ecosystem
  • Enhanced user trust through clearer controls, labels, and visual hierarchy
  • Scalable patterns for future AR features, reducing design debt and improving consistency
  • A bridge between innovation and system design, proving that AR can feel native to the app experience
